The Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis has retained the Kwame Building Group, a leading minority contractor, to oversee the design and construction of a Community Empowerment Center on the site of a convenience store destroyed during the 2014 unrest along West Florissant Avenue.
The Urban League last week broke ground on a project that will place a facility for workforce training and employment placement services on property occupied by a QuikTrip until Aug. 10, 2014. The store was looted and burned when violence erupted in response to the Aug. 9 shooting of an unarmed teen, Michael Brown, by Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson. Kwame Project Manager Zachary Hamilton said the Urban League center is in the final design stage. Once the design is complete, the firm will begin the process of securing Ferguson permits to move the project forward. Hamilton said Kwame is targeting a Fall, 2016 completion date. The new building is then expected to provide training and employment services for up to 500 North County residents. The facility will also house agencies offering assistance for health, mental health and social services issues. St. Louis Post Dispatch © July 2015 |
