| ST. LOUIS (KTVI) – Dozens of high school students had a special day of education Wednesday and it all took place outside of their normal classrooms.
Around 40 students took part in the first ever ‘Young Women of Power Summit.’ The kids were from Vashon High School, Confluence Academy and Covenant House. The event featured motivational speakers, mentoring sessions and panel discussions aimed at empowering young women toward success. Some of the discussions focused on conflict resolution and women in business. Event organizer Yolonda Lankford says the summit was all about inspiring young women to succeed in their lives. ‘The message is you are important and you have value and that you should think about the choices that you will make that will affect your future,’ explained Lankford. 17-year-old Taquerrah Washington, a junior at Vashon, was one of the students attending the summit. She said, ‘I think this would help me in the near future, help me to become more successful in life. I think this is something that will inspire me to be better.’ The event was put on by the Kwame Foundation—a charity that helps youths in underserved communities through mentoring and scholarships.
