ST. LOUIS, MO — As practicing Catholics enter the season of Lent this Wednesday, for the first time, they have a meatless option to honor the tradition of not eating meat on Fridays that actually tastes like their favorite burger. The meatless Impossible Whopper was test-launched last year in St. Louis on April 1st. The massive success led to a full rollout at Burger King’s more than 7,000 United States restaurants. This is the first full Lenten season that gives Catholics this alternative meatless option that is designed to be nearly indistinguishable from real meat. This year Lent runs from February 26 through April 9.

Abstaining from meat on Fridays during Lent has always been straightforward, with many Catholics turning to fish options. This time of year there always has been a surge in sales of fish sandwiches at Burger King and there are lines at popular Friday fish fries at many churches in St. Louis.

What has the church said of eating real-tasting artificial meat during Lent?

“The simple answer to the question of whether a Catholic may licitly consume artificial meat products on abstinence days is, ‘Yes’,” according to the Society of St. Pius X, an international priestly society.

Broadway Restaurant Group, the St. Louis-based Burger King franchisee selected for the successful national test market of the meatless Impossible Whopper, is one of a select group of United States franchisees that consults with corporate and test market concepts. The franchisee also was chosen to test the newest Burger King restaurant design at its new Jefferson City restaurant at 521 Missouri Blvd. The location is just the second in the world to debut the new Royale décor, which is inspired by the mid-century American road trip.

Broadway Restaurant Group is adding several new locations over the next few months, including in Bellefontaine, Hanley/Natural Bridge, Springfield, Bel Ridge, Delmar Avenue in St. Louis, Howdershell, Columbia and Republic. They are hiring both crew and management positions and many locations. Interested applicants can apply in person or at www.b-restaurants.com/careers.
