McGrath & Associates completes construction of $1.8 million Saint Louis University Hospital Bone Marrow Transplant Center

ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI – McGrath & Associates has completed construction of a $1.8 million, outpatient bone marrow transplant center at Saint Louis University (SLU) Hospital. Located within the Saint Louis University Cancer Center in the West Pavilion of the hospital’s main campus, the 9,900-square-foot facility designed by Fox Architects is the first comprehensive outpatient bone marrow transplant center in the region.

The SLU Hospital Bone Marrow Transplant Center, led by Friedrich G. Schuening, M.D. of the Saint Louis University Cancer Center, will increase patient access to a quality bone marrow transplant program. The outpatient center will improve patients’ quality of life by helping them avoid long hospital stays during and after bone marrow transplants.

The bone marrow center was constructed in an existing hospital space with a low floor-to-deck height and structural concrete beams, requiring close coordination by McGrath and the mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection contractors. A VRF (variable refrigerant flow) HVAC system was engineered to allow for the space’s lower profile ductwork.

McGrath coordinated construction with hospital staff to prevent any disruption to the patient care areas located on the floor below the center and the administration offices above. McGrath also implemented strict contamination control measures to ensure a safe work environment and clean air quality for staff and patients.

McGrath & Associates is a 100 percent employee-owned general contractor and construction management firm specializing in commercial, health care, industrial, institutional and pharmaceutical construction projects since 1983. McGrath is a member of the Associated General Contractors, the St. Louis Construction OSHA Partnership and has been named “General Contractor of the Year” by the American Subcontractors Association Midwest Council four times out of 14 nominations.
