McGrath managing diverse construction team for new $2 million Barnes-Jewish Hospital Pain Management Center

ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI – McGrath & Associates has assembled a diverse construction team for the $2 million expansion of the Pain Management Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital (BJH) in St. Louis, a BJC HealthCare facility. More than 25 percent of the project contract has been awarded to minority-owned and women-owned businesses.

Construction began in February and will be completed in late May. McGrath is providing construction management services; the design team includes OWH and EDM Inc. Disadvantaged business subcontractors include Miller Building Group (MBE), Waterhout (WBE), Deluca/BE Scaife (MBE), Mechanical Solutions (MBE), Pro Insulation (WBE) and Guarantee/TD4 (MBE).

The project will expand the BJH Pain Management Center into a new 11,000-square-foot space on the 14th floor of the Center for Advanced Medicine. Currently located on the 10th floor of the same building, the BJH Pain Management Center offers a multidisciplinary, coordinated approach to managing chronic and acute pain.

McGrath competitively priced the project while proactively developing a diverse team of subcontractors. Approximately 23 percent of the work is contracted with minority-owned businesses and 3 percent with women-owned businesses. McGrath teamed several majority-owned mechanical, electrical and plumbing subcontractors with emerging minority-owned and women-owned businesses to provide mentoring and support.

“The team we assembled for this project reflects BJC’s and our own commitment to diversity,” said Ken Knobbe, president of McGrath. “Our ongoing Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) process is providing new opportunities and mentoring to minority-owned and women-owned sub-contractors and workers.”

Because construction will take place on an occupied patient floor, McGrath will implement infection prevention measures to ensure clean air quality for patients and staff. McGrath also will coordinate construction to prevent disruption to patient care areas and to ensure a safe work environment for employees.

McGrath & Associates, celebrating its 30th year, is a 100 percent employee-owned general contractor and construction management firm with diverse experience in commercial, health care, industrial, institutional and pharmaceutical construction projects. McGrath is a member of the Associated General Contractors, the St. Louis Construction OSHA Partnership and has been named “General Contractor of the Year” by the American Subcontractors Association Midwest Council four times out of 15 nominations.
