ST. LOUIS, MO – Wiegmann Associates won a Contracting Business Design/Build award for their work on the built-to-suit campus for BAE Systems in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Wiegmann designed and installed a $4.3 million design/build HVAC, process piping, and Building Management System (BMS) for BAE System’s new 334,000-square-foot, world-class aviation electronics manufacturing and office center. The new center replaced BAE Systems’ 1940s-era production facility. Wiegmann also provided a complete BIM as-built model. The general contractor was Arco National Construction Company, Inc.
“We are proud to be honored for our work on this state-of-the-art manufacturing project,” said Steve Pearce, Vice President of Business Development for Wiegmann Associates. “This project challenged us to design a flexible, efficient HVAC system within precise temperature and humidity requirements in just 20 months, with no interruption in manufacturing production. We were able to achieve that goal through engineering solutions, tight phasing and strict scheduling.”
The Contracting Business Design/Build Awards honor the finest examples of commercial Design/Build HVAC mechanical systems installations across the U.S. The winning projects “used collaborative relationships to achieve premium comfort, modern efficiency and the utmost in energy savings,” according to Terry McIver, executive editor of Contracting Business.
BAE’s new 334,000-square-foot building includes a nearly 50,000-square-foot office/support area and a 285,000-square-foot manufacturing production floor with complex process piping: gaseous nitrogen, compressed air, hot exhaust air and chemical exhaust air. The manufacturing processes require cooling water to keep production equipment operating within temperature tolerances.
BAE Systems needed ultimate flexibility on the production floor to be able to rearrange equipment as needed for future product demand. Wiegmann Associates collaborated with the owner to design a solution that would be cost-effective without compromising the HVAC and piping systems.
The team was challenged to meet precise temperature and humidity controls on the production floor, with air temperature in the 72-75F range and relative humidity between 30% to 60% year-round. The Wiegmann design solution maintains consistent humidity across the production floor while minimizing equipment. Wiegmann also installed a Delta Controls custom building management system with web access to allow the owner to monitor and control all systems remotely.
